The kesa is the robe of the Buddha. Originally, Shakyamuni Buddha gathered up old rags, washed them and dyed them with earth
– kesa means ‘earth colour’ – then sewed them together meticulously stitch by stitch, before donning them.
The kesa has since been passed down from master to disciple.
The sewing of the kesa follows very precise rules derived from tradition.
It is usually sewn by oneself, with great concentration born of the spirit of zazen.
This workshop is open to anyone who intends to one day receive the precepts of Buddhism or become a monk.
