A silent retreat (in Japanese: sesshin, ‘touching the mind’) in homage to the Buddha’s Awakening.
Every year, in temples, monks commemorate the Buddha’s Awakening. Sitting in zazen, they re-enact his experience. The retreat takes place in silence, with each person facing their own inner self. Thirty-minute zazen sessions follow one another and alternate with kin-hin. It concludes with a grand ceremony commemorating the Buddha’s Awakening.
