Sewing of the kesa

The kesa is the garment of Buddha. The traditional method for sewing it has been handed down to us. It has become the symbol of transmission and teaching.

It is given and received in the ordination ceremonies for bodhisattvas, monks and nuns.

« The authentic transmission of the kesa is more important and tells us more about the dharma than any explanation of the sutras. We must never forget this point. »

Master Dogen: Shobogenzo Den e

« Donning the true kesa means casting off our mistakes and returning to the true dharma. In Zen, zazen and kesa are one. Wearing the kesa and doing zazen, we can obtain a great merit, the true Way, unconsciously, naturally, automatically. »

Master Deshimaru: The Book of the Kesa

At Kanshoji, sewing of the kesa is taught on two afternoons a week and during kesa sewing courses throughout the year.
