The people who live in the monastery form a single, unified body in which each person has a place. The aspiration to live like Buddha is the very reason for the monastery’s existence. Daily practice helps us to forget ourselves, to be fully present in each moment and, in that way, to practice giving. This practice is a source of tranquility and happiness.
It is possible to spend anywhere from a few days to a few months here in order to discover the teaching of Buddha, to practice with the monks and nuns, or simply to do a retreat.
A newcomer to the monastery begins with a period of self examination and solitude during which you may look at your motivations and aspiration to share the life of the monastery.
Then you become part of the rhythm of everyday life which is marked by zazen early in the morning and in the evening. The rest of the day is divided between ceremonies, meals taken together, teaching, taking part in the work necessary to life in the monastery, study and discussion.
The essence of the Buddha Way is to allow people to live in harmony with each other. That’s why the basic rule at Kanshoji is to take others into account.
